Aggregated information
When you visit, we collect information such as the pages you view, the searches you run, your browser and device type, the site that referred you, and your general location (such as city or country) inferred from your IP address. Search terms are included because they appear in the page address. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes IP addresses to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. We do not link IP addresses to anything that identifies you personally.
How we use this information
We use aggregated information to understand which documents people read and what they search for, and to improve the archive. We do not sell this information. We will not disclose information about visitors to a third party except when required by court order, law, or a governmental agency.
Website analytics
We use Google Analytics and PostHog to measure how the site is used. Google signals and ad personalization are turned off, PostHog session recording is turned off, and we do not use advertising or remarketing cookies. Cookies and browser storage
Our analytics providers set cookies, or use similar browser storage, to tell visits apart. The site itself uses your browser’s session storage to return you to your place in search results; it is cleared when you close the tab. You can set your browser to alert you about cookies or to refuse them. The archive, including search and every document, works fully without them.
Information security
The site is served only over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and access to analytics data is limited to the individuals who need it.
Children and privacy
This archive is not directed at children. It reproduces government records about criminal prosecutions, some of which describe violence. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Links to other sites
Documents in the archive link to other sites, such as justice.gov and fbi.gov. Those sites have their own privacy policies, which may differ from this one.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. Changes take effect when they are posted, and the date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated.
